nogaya, the missing link 

NOGAYA Women's Collective, a social enterprise with the unique agenda of serving as the missing link for all the NGO programs that train disadvantaged women into an artisan trade.

Most of these projects do not come to fruition and do not allow the women to come out of poverty through their work because of lack of marketability.  Many years of efforts and funding are thus not maximized.

Sporadically, here and there, an individual or organization invests efforts in support and promotion them, but until now, no international platform has been built in a systematic way.

This is where NOGAYA intervenes to fill in the gap and allow NGOs to fulfill their missions and the women they support to succeed.

Why Women?

Because…

In our times of globalization when villages are deserted in search of urban employment, women left behind are often the main breadwinners in the rural community.

By working together around a craft, these women become the retainers of family and community welfare, values and ethnicity.

When such women groups are successful in selling their production, the whole community's economy improves. Men, who had left in search of urban work, return to invest their efforts close to their families; children are no longer sent away as servants.    Child prostitution as well as AIDS are thus curbed.        

Having realized the essential role women cooperatives can play in destitute areas, NGOs have implemented many training programs that teach them how to make traditional handcraft using the materials.

Why Collectives?

Because...

When women create a financial work group where all decisions are taken collectively they are less prone to be the victims of abuse of power and intimidation.

Research shows that women are known to reinvest in their own communities and families.

Women cooperatives, when successful, become money lenders for the whole community and allow the village to survive and not become dispersed.
